Getting Electricity Connected in Ghana From Abroad: An ECG Evidence Checklist
Separate wiring certification, service requests, inspections, quotations, receipts and actual connection status.
A contractor’s message that “the meter is coming” is not the same as evidence that a property has been formally connected. For an owner managing a Ghana project from abroad, keep the request, wiring certificate, site inspection, quotation, payment and connection outcome as separate records.
Short answer: ECG says new-service requests should use its Self Service Platform or PowerApp. Its published requirements include licensed electrical work, an Installation Completion Certificate, applicant identification and the original and photocopy of the site plan. ECG describes inspection and quotation steps, with connection subject to conditions and full payment of the quotation. Official ECG procedure
Questions to ask first
- Has the request been opened through ECG’s official channel?
- Can the electrician’s licence and signed Installation Completion Certificate be verified?
- Is the original site plan available and matched to the exact premises?
- Has ECG inspected the site and issued a quotation or estimate?
- Does every payment have an official ECG receipt, and is connection status confirmed?
1. Start with the official request channel
ECG says a new service supply or additional connection should be requested through “New Service Connection” on its Self Service Platform or PowerApp. Record the date, applicant, property description, service-request route and any reference or account details. Ask the local contact to send the official record or screenshots rather than relying only on a voice note.
2. Keep wiring certification separate from ECG connection
ECG states that electrical installation and maintenance should be carried out by licensed electricians in accordance with prevailing wiring regulations. Its published requirements include an Installation Completion Certificate completed and signed by the licensed electrician, applicant identification and the original and photocopy of the site plan.
The certificate is evidence about the installation process; it is not by itself proof that ECG has connected the premises. Record the electrician, licence information, certificate date, premises description and any correction requested. Do not present a certificate as an electrical safety guarantee or a substitute for qualified electrical advice.
3. Separate inspection, quotation and payment
ECG says an inspection team may visit and survey the site to prepare a quotation or estimate. Keep the inspection date and written observations separate from the quotation. Then keep the quotation amount, payment date, payment channel and official receipt together.
Published charges and tariffs can change. ECG’s FAQ advises customers to use authorised Customer Relations Assistants, obtain receipts for official payments and avoid middlemen. If anyone asks for cash outside the official process, pause and confirm with ECG using its published contact details.
4. Ask what kind of connection is being discussed
ECG describes service categories including straight service, pole extension, separate meter, additional load and temporary supply. ECG also says a request involving more than two poles is considered a development project requiring engineering studies. Ask ECG to identify the applicable category instead of assuming every property is a standard meter installation.
5. Build a distance-ready evidence pack
Keep five labelled sections: applicant and site identity; electrician and wiring certificate; ECG service request; inspection and quotation; payment and connection outcome. For each item record whether it is requested, supplied, submitted, inspected, quoted, paid, connected, returned for correction or unresolved.
A photo of a meter box or cable may be useful context, but it is not conclusive proof of the account holder, approved connection or correct installation. Confirm status through ECG’s official channels.
S.E.S does not provide electrical engineering, wiring certification, utility approval, legal, surveying, financial or title-certification services. S.E.S does not certify the installation, meter, connection, payments, title, boundaries, permits, leases or tax liability. Qualified professionals and ECG must answer specialist and official-status questions.
Pause before paying or energising
Pause if the property description changes, the site plan does not match, the electrician’s certification cannot be verified, a quotation is missing, an official receipt is unavailable, or someone claims a private payment guarantees connection.
Keep the utility record clear from abroad.
S.E.S can organise supplied evidence and dated observations within an agreed oversight scope. An enquiry is not an electrical application or utility approval.
